Julianne Hough returned to ‘Dancing with the Stars’ as a guest judge on Monday night (April 7 th ), but her comments on the show ended up angering many of the show’s fans and dancers, reports The Star Ledger .
Hough gave some harsh critiques to the competitors. The harshest critique she gave was to competitor, Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
“I felt like it was a little bit like, this week could get past so that you could be back with Meryl (Davis), and you just had to phone it in (with McKellar),” Hough said to Chmerkovskiy.
Monday night’s theme was a ‘Switch-Up,’ meaning that the competitors switched partners. It was the first time in the show’s history that this has been done. Maksim, the eldest of the Chmerkovskiy brothers competing on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ danced a jive with Danica McKellar. McKellar was originally Maksim’s brother, Val’s original dancing partner.
UPI.com reports that while the dancing pair’s dancing may have been flawed, it was in part because their music was off, and everyone was still shocked by Hough’s comments.
Hough explained that she felt like McKellar is an incredible dancer, but that Chmerkovskiy was holding the dancer back and that he had danced better with Olympian Meryl Davis.
“I felt like this was lolly-gagging,” Hough also said of the routine. “I was like, ‘That’s not fair for Danica.’ I wanted to see more of her dancing, I mean, that was where I came from. It was not to be malicious at all.”
Chmerkovskiy, for his part, did not take too kindly to Hough’s comments.
“The (expletive) that Julianne made up was nothing but exactly that,” Chmerkovskiy said after his routine. “It was an invalid comment that had nothing to do with Danica’s performance, which was brilliant.”
Chmerkovskiy went on to explain that people all have their own opinions and that he just has to deal with it. Besides, as he also says, “It doesn’t matter. It’s not about me. People want to be entertained when they tune in.”
Chmerkovskiy was not the only dancer angered by Hough’s comments. Maksim’s brother, Val, came to his defense.
“Personally, I thought it was very irresponsible of her (Hough) to make those comments,” Valentin said. “There’s nothing (Maksim) would ever do to jeopardize my success of the show — and Danica’s an extension of me — my partnership and my success, and so… I took it kind of personally.”
The ‘Dancing with the Stars’ competitors will return to their original partners in next week’s episode. Also next week, elimination will take place based on the competitors’ week three performance with their original partner and their week four performance with their new partner.
‘Dancing with the Stars’ airs Mondays at 8 p.m ET on ABC.
Julianne Hough, however, will not be on next Monday’s episode. Hough’s future plans include a dancing tour – which will span 40 cities across the U.S. and Canada – with her brother, Derek, according to ABC News .
