Valve is Working On a Free-to-Play Game
In an interesting move, Valve expanded its digital library even further last week with the inclusion of free-to-play games with exclusive in-game items. Apparently Valve doesn’t just want to sell them, however – they want to make them, too.
When interviewed by french site Barre De Vie, Valve’s Doug Lombardi confirmed that Valve was working on at least one free-to-play title, admitting that, while not popular in America, the free-to-play model is still very lucrative in other markets. Naturally, Valve wants a piece of that action.
Considering Valve’s success with micro-transactions in Team Fortress 2, this move is the obvious next step for the company. While he didn’t make any mention of what title it could be in the interview, it wouldn’t exactly blow me away if that free-to-play title ends up being Dota 2. After all, that formula works out considerably well for Riot games with League of Legends.
Steam’s current free-to-play catalog includes Champions: Free for All, Forsaken Worlds, Global Agenda: Free Agent, Spiral Knights and Alliance of Valiant Arms. Valve is expected to launch even more free-to-play titles in the coming weeks.
