2010 NFL Draft one year alter: San Diego Chargers

One year ago I said that maybe San Diego Chargers GM AJ Smith had pushed all of his chips into the middle of his table by trading up to take RB Ryan Matthews. Now it looks like he may have busted out. Simply but the Chargers paid too steep a price for a guy who could not beat out Mike Tolbert for the starting job. When evaluating draft picks we have to consider teh price that was paid, and it really looks like the Chargers paid far too much for Matthews.

Before we go any further let take a look at the 2010 Chargers draft class:

  • Round One- RB Ryan Matthews
  • Round Three- LB Donald Butler
  • Round Four- DB Darrell Stuckey
  • Round Five- DT Cam Thomas
  • Round Five- QB Jonathan Crompton
  • Round Seven- TE Dedrick Epps

So while Matthews did have 678 rushing yards, and while he did average 4.3 yards per carry the ultimate success of this draft class will rest on how he develops down the road. If he becomes a pro bowl running back then this class looks a heck of a lot better. So far this is a draft class that has not delivered much impact. Butler was hurt in training camp; Stuckey was a game day inactive for all but one game. Thomas had seven tackles and two sacks. Crompton and Epps were ct in training camp and now wear different color jerseys.

So far the 2010 Chargers draft class is very under average and it continues a under average streak by this team in the NFL Draft going back three years. Simply put they need to do a lot better in the draft if they want to be a playoff team.
